What the education & research sector sends us most often
The University of Luxembourg has gathered most of its activity at Belval, on the former steelworks site, and recruits students and researchers across Europe. Alongside it, the European schools, the international secondary schools and the country's public education take in children whose parents were educated elsewhere. Several systems therefore sit side by side without overlapping: a French transcript, a German certificate, a national Luxembourg qualification and a European Baccalaureate are not read against the same grid.
Degrees and transcripts
Qualifications, school reports, diploma supplements and course descriptions, in sworn form where the file calls for it.
Equivalence and enrolment
Papers for an application to have a qualification recognised by the competent service, here or in the country where it has to count.
Papers and publications
Articles, conference abstracts, dissertations and research reports, revised by a native-speaking reviser from the discipline.
Mobility and placements
Placement agreements, Erasmus learning agreements and accords signed between an institution here and its partner abroad.
Teaching material
Lesson plans, timetables, practical assignment briefs and learning units followed online.
Applications and funding
Grant applications, letters of recommendation, project descriptions and interim reports for a European programme.
The education & research sector in a country where three languages coexist
The University of Luxembourg has moved much of its activity to Belval, onto the former steelworks grounds, and operates in several teaching languages. Applicants, doctoral candidates and lecturers come from everywhere, their papers are issued in the language of their home country, and a degree recognition application calls for the qualification and the transcript in sworn form. We translate them, and we have the translator's signature legalised when the receiving office asks for it.
The country's school system is a special case in its own right. Literacy is taught in German, instruction shifts gradually into French, Luxembourgish remains the language of exchange, and English- or French-medium streams round out the picture for families settled for a few years. The result is reports, attestations and certificates built like nothing else: we translate them while spelling out the original marking scale and the level actually reached, failing which a file gets misjudged abroad.
In research, instructions change from one publisher and one funding programme to the next. Papers, abstracts, posters and grant applications follow the recipient's exact requirements, then pass to a reviser native to the field. In schools, finally, the interpreter makes a meeting possible with parents who share none of the teaching languages: translating what is said about their own progress is not the child's job.
- University award together with its grading scale
- Complete application with covering letter
- Scientific publication and abstract put to a panel
- Grant application and progress report
When the spoken word counts as much as the written one
A thesis defence, a conference and a parents' evening call for neither the same equipment nor the same interpreting technique.
Conferences and study days
Simultaneous from a booth, receivers handed out in the room and a technician on site, including where part of the audience follows remotely.
Panels and defences
Presentation before an international panel, defence of a thesis or dissertation, oral admission test.
Meetings with families
Start-of-year evening, class council and the choice of pathway, where the parents master neither French nor German.
Delegations and visits
Receiving a foreign delegation, a laboratory tour and the signing of an agreement between institutions.
Recognition of a qualification follows the rules of the country where it has to count, and the list of papers varies with the level of study as much as with the state that issued the document. A sworn translation is required in many cases, sometimes together with a certified copy of the original. Ask the receiving service before you order anything: a list obtained in advance saves paying twice.
Four steps between your upload and the handover
A single project manager follows your education & research file from the first message to the handover, so that no instruction gets lost on the way.
- 01
Send the document as it is
A phone snapshot will do, badly framed included. For a spoken assignment, give us the date, the address of the appointment and the two languages involved.
- 02
Price and deadline inside one hour
You receive the price, the handover date and the route chosen: sworn where an authority requires it, standard in every other case. No commitment attached.
- 03
A linguist from the field takes it on
The text goes to someone who uses education & research terminology every day, and a second linguist reads it again before anything leaves us.
- 04
File delivered or interpreter on site
The file reaches you electronically. The stamped copy follows by registered post when the recipient insists on it, and the interpreter turns up at the agreed address.
A degree to have recognised before the next school year?
Degree and transcript in sworn form, urgent handling in 24 to 48 hours when the filing date is close.
What changes the moment a education & research file reaches us
The reviser comes from the discipline
A social sciences article is not revised like an engineering report. We assign someone who knows the conventions of your field and the expectations of the journal, the panel or the funder in question.
The schedule runs back from the deadline
Give us the filing date or the time the session opens: we build the calendar backwards from that point. If a milestone slips, you hear about it the same day and not the evening before.
The specialist for the field, not the first one free
A specialised text goes to someone who practises in that area. A tight handover date does not suspend the rule: it only shortens the time we have to find the right person.
Confidentiality signed before anything is opened
Everyone involved signs a confidentiality undertaking before reaching your file. Documents sit on infrastructure located inside the European Union and are erased on a written request.
The approved quote is the invoice
Nothing is added later. Revision, layout work and delivery are inside the figure stated at the outset.
No travel charge
Luxembourg, Esch-sur-Alzette, Differdange, Dudelange, Bettembourg, Mersch, Ettelbruck: the interpreter travels there without the journey being billed.
Frequently asked questions
Does a degree already drawn up in French have to be translated?
Not for an administration here, and we say so plainly when that is the case. French is one of the country's administrative languages, and so is German. What holds files up lies elsewhere: the receiving service often asks for annexes that do not exist in that form in the originating system. Send us the list you were given and we will sort it out.
And to have a Luxembourg qualification count abroad?
Plan for an explanatory note on top of the translation. The names of study cycles and the marking scales used here have no exact twin elsewhere, and a foreign service reading the translation alone sometimes misjudges the level by one step. We keep the official name and explain in the margin what it covers.
What do you need before a conference?
Three things: the programme, the speakers' abstracts and the slide decks, a few days ahead. An interpreter who has seen the titles does not discover the terminology at the microphone. The room set-up includes one booth per language, two interpreters taking turns in stretches of around twenty minutes, the receivers and a technician.
Do you handle the apostille on a degree?
No. The apostille concerns the original document and is requested from the competent authority of the country that issued the qualification; in the Grand Duchy that competence lies with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. We take care of having the translation sworn and, if needed, of the legalisation of the translator's signature, and we set out the order in which to take the steps.
